Cooking fats

September 3, 2009

Because we went away at the weekend AM came over and looked after Jasper and Otis for us. This pic were taken the night before we went. They both came up for a cuddle in the middle of the bed.

AM informed us that Jasper was a star and purred for her lots. Otis on the other hand was slightly standoffish mainly because it was not his normal routine. Although when given the choice to eat some very expensive food he meowed with vigor. They looked smart and well looked after when we got back due to lots of good brushing.

Well they were happy to see us back and seemed ok early in the week returning to the standard routine. Then last night they decided it was fight night. Probably something to do with the massive rain storm we had nearly all night. They were not settled and woke me several times. This is why no matter how cute cats are they’re just like kids and will wake you up in the night and require “sorting out” In this case luckily the sorting is just a “SHHHHH!” and return to slumber. Next time I’ll be shutting the bedroom door and squirting them with water if they scratch. Still they don’t do it often. Still love them even though I could have strangled them both at 4am.

Things I been up to lately.

July 7, 2009

I had Lunch with Mary last Thursday. Mary made me squee. She’s good like that. It is so nice to catch up with an old friend when she’s moved away. We sat out in the glorious shade, heh, we’re not stupid. Ate Italian pasta at the local zizzi’s and relaxed in to the lunch. The squee was because quite a while back I gave Mary some of my wool stash. Stuff I may have already used bits of, other bits I was never going to get around to using. Anyways Mary did what any good knitter would do. Knitted for a knitter. NOBODY knits for a knitter and I was so super happy to get a new pair *cough* of socks. I cough because the pair was actually 3 socks due to Mary having some random half balls and she used up all the yarn. Now I have 3 lovely socks and I’m super happy.

One thing I’m no so happy about are snails in the garden.

Although this guy is cute and rather blorpular, I’m still at odds with the snails in my garden. He was stashing away in the watering can waiting for me to pour him over my little joyous vegetables. They keep eating my veg before I can! Still he is so cute I had to show him to the cats. (he came out of his shell when I filled the watering can and stayed out for some fresh air.

snailio inglesias meets otis

Otis was not too sure. The snail was interested in him though. Otis made a fast escape after this encounter. which is odd because he plays the big super confident “I get my way” in the house. The woim or even the cat/snail turned that one round. He’s a big wuss.

Intrepid interspecies snorgling

Now Jasper is the contemplative sort and will trust almost everything you give him. He was having a good ol’ sniff of the snail right here. I sadly missed getting a photo of him licking the poor snailio. Still I do quite enjoy intrepid inter-species snorgling. Sad to say though this snail is probably not with us any more. Some get placed in my wormery to live on rotting veg. Others, if I spot them eating my lettuces get hoofed over the fence to land in a car park.

Next update includes home grown vegetables, as soon as i get the photos off the camera.

hello *tap tap* is this thing on?

May 13, 2009

ah. well, we’ve been on holiday. I have no better excuses. Lots has been happening but very little blogging. I havent even put any photos on flickr for ages.

firstly I’ve had two great visits to my family. A great bbq, and also my brother installing a tyre rope swing in his woods which is just fabulous. Very fun and only slightly scary.

Our lovely week and a bit off work ended up being a very large splurge and means that we’ll not be buying any new toys for a while. Most enjoyable, splashing the holiday cash. Not something I do without saving for first.

I took the cats to the cattery. They appeared to have a good time there although we missed them I’m not sure they really missed us. They even had a quick checkup at the vets and were doing fine.

I drove to Southampton 7.5 hours on a Friday afternoon of a bank holiday weekend. It was not fun at all. Spent some lovely time with the in laws and all of Scotty’s family. Another bbq and playing with nieces. A trip to Ikea, which was my very first and purchased some new house furniture. Then a really good ride back home early bank holiday Monday.

We even picked up the cats the same day, got home and collapsed. After a couple of days bimbling about and sorting ourselves out we took a day trip to London on the train. I wanted to go and find my new handbag. I then also bought a new laptop bag which is not the same colour but they’re a good set together. Scotty and I walked for miles around London and visited the British museum and the tate modern and stayed out for dinner because the off peak tickets meant we needed to leave later. We went for Yo Sushi, which was a new experience and amazingly cheaper than I expected.

The garden is coming along nicely. Something is eating some of my veggie plants and its a phantom night eater. Other than that the spuds are sprouting all over the place. Herbs are in abundance and everything else is ticking over and will probably not grow big enough to fruit this year but it is still very early.

Otis has taken to being a pain in the arse when it comes to eating. If he does not like the food he will stand and moan at you CONSTANTLY every few seconds. I annoyed him the other night by being nice and still not feeding him the other food he wanted. Eventually I saw him huff at me. No kidding this cat had one frustrated strop which was just not being listened to. Poor fella. At least he’s not the night scratcher which leads us to…. Jasper. Now where Otis is annoying on food Jasper is lovely and just gets on with it. Where Otis is lovely at night and settles well on the bed, Jasper is the complete oposite and spends several hours of the night running in to the bathroom, scratching the cupboards and running away because he knows I’m going to reach for the spray bottle. The spray bottle has become a game to him. This is not good because I then have lots of broken little patches in my nights sleep and I am queen of sleep and would like to have an unbroken night some time soon. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. Please understand I cant shut them out of the bedroom because they would just scratch the bedroom door. I cant then shut them out of upstairs because the house is just not built like that.

On to the lovely Ikea things we bought. We’ve got a new side board thingy table under the telly that looks fab. Then a new set of stools and a bar for the kitchen. Then after all the handbags, train tickets, meals out for family and cinema tickets for my sisters husband for his birthday and us of course. I’m mostly spent out. We went to see Star Trek and having been a fan for most of my life I love this new movie. I really do like most of what Zachary Quinto does. I think he’s a great actor and makes a very good Spock.

Then Scotty went out on Sunday after all the splurging and bought himself a canon 5D, which I must admit appears to be a great investment of money but a WHOLE LOT MORE than I was intending on spending this month. Still we’re quite the modern couple and his money is still his money and then I get to play with all his toys. YAY!

plans for next month include a car service. ARGH!! and catching up with the knitting. Not much of it mind you. The sweater has stalled at the first sleeve. BUT the beautiful shawl is slowly turning in to a giant bed spread…. More on that next time and I hope that will be sooner rather than later.

March 16, 2009

I finished some socks I forgot to even put up on ravelry. I’m not best pleased with them because they were made from courtelle. I don’t think this yarn is suitable for socks. Still they fit, but meh. Cant even be bothered to tie in the ends at the moment. I also nearly felted my best home made socks to the point where they would not stretch back again. I seriously need to do some hand washing and blocking.

I missed Knit night, I was going to go but within the time of me walking in the house to leaving time Scotty was violently sick. He spent all of Thursday night and Friday up chucking and various other bodily functions going at fast speeds it should not be mentioned in detail on the web. Urgh. Poor fella. I left him to it and went from work to shopping to make sure we had easily digestible items at hand for recovery. You know the stuff. Lots of toast, tomato soup.

Saturday we were meant to go to Wells to a flickr meet. Scotty was not well enough for it. I spent the day researching what project I wanted to knit next. Sunday we managed to get out to the beach at Caister and walked around slowly for about an hour. By this time Scotty said he was feeling a bit rough again so no fish and chips at the seaside. Home we went so I cast on for my very first proper jumper. By the end of Sunday the ribbing all 5 inches of it are almost done and I’m ready to try and read a proper jumper pattern. This is a big leap and I’m sure blogging about it means it may just get ripped out tonight. we’ll see 🙂

Most of the rest of the weekend has been cleaning and tidying and making sure my man has everything he needs to relax. right now he’s still home and exhausted from the beating the bug gave him. Amazingly so far I appear not to have caught it and thank goodness! I don’t think I could clean up after both of us at the same time!

One good thing, the sun is shining and its lovely to see all the buds coming out on the bushes around and about. It means I’m already wearing my sunglasses outside at every opportunity just to make sure I’m not going to be a snotty hay fever mess. Otis and Jasper are also dropping their fur everywhere at the moment which is impossible to keep on top of. I must hoover soon but I just know it will be best done when the cats are in the garden so they cant fur up the house for 5 minutes.

Although Otis and Jasper are lovely as ever, I am deeply upset by them. They ate or at least chewed my best headphones. I keep them safe in my handbag. I think this was Jasper but when I found them both playing with the rubber ear bud  and then found they’d extracted out my headphones from my handbag and chewed through I was not happy at all. They were sennheiser and now will cost £39 to replace…. unless I can find some just as nice, that fit well and that are not pink… cos obviously our guys like pink.

for penance they have been looking after their daddy well.

January 26, 2009

Got to love my kitties. They’re getting bigger and friendlier by the day. Long are the days gone when I could expect some time alone in the house. IF we’re home, they’re in to what we’re doing unless its around 2pm nap time. Which is where I caught them like this:

Which reminded me I’ve not taken any really classy shots of our boys for a good long while. Whilst the light was ok to good in the bedroom I got these:

Such handsome fellows, such class, and happy to pose just for me. 🙂

Which would be fine if I could get wordpress to format in any sort of function of normality. Le sigh… better luck next time.

I was planning

January 8, 2009

on doing a knitting post soon. I still need to finish one object, wash and block it and photograph it. Then I also need to get a photo of dad in his scarf. So I am trying to get there but I don’t see the point in being half arsed about it and not doing it all together.

Anyway on the good news front the dentists was way way better than expected. I’m almost jumping with joy at how well it went. No injections, no pain killers. All he did was very delicately remove the old filling and stick in a new one. No drilling of actual tooth matter at all. He also fitted it so well he tested to make sure I could floss properly around it which did not happen last time. It’s still an amalgam filling but better than a decaying one. Then to make things even better he said there was no point having any other fillings yet, the others may not need doing if I keep looking after my teeth properly YAY! see you in 6 months DOUBLE YAY! I wanted to kiss the guy but, I’m quite reserved and still English so I just said thank you and that he did a great job. He’s made me a lot less scared of the dentist and I know he’s not going to do any work unless absolutely necessary. Not like the last one saying I needed a further 4 fillings, 6 years ago. Thank god I did not go back there.

I’ve shown you a couple of the videos i’ve got so far with my new canon ixus camera. I’m going to try and keep them all tagged together in Flickr. Click the link to see catty goodness in the forms of Otis, Jasper and our neighbours cat Mr Shouty. We’ve still not got his real name but I do think our name for him suits him fine.

I hope to get more videos soon too, and more photos. I just have to wait for a chance in daylight, which is still rather lacking around this part of the world. The daylight hours are definitely getting longer but its still dark most of the time, or grey.

Hopefully its knit night tonight 🙂

The boys had some lovely toys for christmas, I was intending on getting video of them both playing with their new squeaky mice. They have learned how to squeak them too. Except now both already appear to be lost in to the secret stash place they have hidden anything useful that they have been able to remove. One thing this little holiday has taught me is that I love my family.

are we nearly there yet?

December 15, 2008

Had the yearly, thanks for working with us call and you have….. no extra pay. Fair enough, tough times. I’m just glad I have a job.

Found some cool new puzzles at Strimko. I like them, think like sudoku.

I had a dentist on Friday, I need a new filling. BOO!

I then had my legs waxed and my nails done. Lovely.

ALL of the Christmas presents have arrived. WOO! achievement.

Scotty and I were meant to go out on Saturday to his works party but it was a 50 minute drive each way. Meh we gave it the heave ho and stayed home in the warm.

Which gave me time to finish dad’s scarf. Need to tie in the ends. I’m happy with it now but I did have to completely re-do the cast on edge. It took most of Saturday and Sunday just to knit 6 rows and undo 3. Good thing I know he’s going to like it.

I cant wait for Christmas, I’ve had enough of this year already. It just feels like some things are a bit of an uphill struggle and they don’t look like its going to get any easier. Not all things, just a few niggles.  Work…time…. although It feels like I’ve had the best of 3 weeks of great moods, so hey not all bad.

Roll on the holiday I have 9 days off including weekends and cant wait to have some time.

Our boys kept me super hot last night, they have taken to lying as close as possible at nigt which can get a bit stifling. At least they are not up in our face. They’ve had a go at some carpet too recently. Little terrors! Still, the cuteness, its soooooooo lovely I can put up with all of it.

www weekend!

September 29, 2008

Friday night I got home to find Jasper in a funny old mood. Scotty had told me he was miserable that morning when he got up. He just looked moody and very fed up. Well, that evening I wrapped him in a blanket and sat him beside me for the whole evening. He was not even stopping me fiddle with his back paws. Something was wrong and it was obvious because he did not touch any food or water all evening and only water in the morning. We tried to make him walk about but he was so very uncomfortable he walked 3 paces and sat down. That was it, I called the vet and took him in on Saturday morning for a checkup. Neither of our cats have ever had a hairball and we found this most surprising after Erasmus was a regular twice a month hocking up at 3am at the end of the bed. Always on the carpet. I tried to get Jasper in the cat carrier and waited for him to go pee first. Very kind of him to make sure he was ok for the car journey. Otis jumped in the cat carrier and would not get out. I ended up taking them both to the vet and I swear Otis just went along to keep his brother company. The checkup went ok, Jasper had a bit of a temperature and a very sore tummy that he would not allow her to prod properly because he tensed up. I was supplied with some antibiotics, some liquid paraffin and he was given an injection and sent on his way.  My purse is now £50 the lighter but within the hour of getting medicine and getting home he was walking about a bit more and purring. I’ve kept up the meds and this morning (monday) Jasper was back to his old self fighting with his brother. I’m still checking the litter to make sure he goes properly, which I think is going to take a couple more days to clear up.

Scotty and I did make it in to the back garden to hang out washing and do a little weeding in the afternoon sunshine. The rest of Saturday was spent on the sofa curled up with Jasper, knitting and complaining about my period. I’m really not sure the pill is helping them, but its worth a try. I just have to wait for my body to get used to them.

Sunday was more productive, more washing and a visit to my brothers house for a bbq in the rain! It always rains when we bbq at my brothers house. Or it has at least the last 3 times. Dad was there as were the rest of our family and some of my sil’s family too. We left quite early because we wanted to make sure Jasper was not being a, beaten up by his brother, b, eating ok and c, walking about. I so need a cat cam for all the rooms in our house. I’d have them on live feed all day.

Finally on to knitting. I’m making a secret scarf for Eve…. well not so secret now I have said something here. Eve: If you’re reading look away now! Anyway, its on ravelry and flickr and its very pink and in pure cashmere and be a you tea full. This is to say thanks for the cake, nearly everyone else who helped has been given some knitting in the past. This one is very special and will hopefully have a little leaflet with its history in it too so that it can become more of an heirloom for her daughter.

It has taken an absolute age to knit Scotty’s socks I started them nearly two months ago. Finally late Sunday I finished the main pattern and moved over to the final ribbing for the cuff. I just cant wait to get this one off the needles and washed and on his feet. Next time I’m using sport or DK to knit man socks. 64ST in the round, was I mad? YES.

August 5, 2008

It seems all I’m doing around here is keeping you up to date as things have happened, maybe a few days late. I hope its ok by all of you because I certainly don’t have the brain meats to achieve much else right now. Google calendar is becoming my saviour as I’m nearly always near a computer or at worst Scotty’s iphone we have access to be able to use it like a proper diary and keep things noted ready for so many appointments! I’ve never had a diary like it and I doubt I will again. I’m trying to enjoy it while it happens.

Saturday I had another dress fitting. Its coming along nicely. The shoulder arm holes and that whatnot were all pinned in to place. I took a friend from work with me. It was a wise move, it was lovely to have company.

I Knitted a Calorimetry (ravelry link). I knitted nearly half of it and was disappointed in her style of short rows. I’m sure they are very good but I wanted to do it my way. HA, heard that before I hear you say. had to get gauge, so I knitted most of it before ripping out and doing it all again. Plus I didn’t want just ribbing across the top so I did some basic cables to create a diamond lattice. The new owner loves it already and even though I gave it to her before tying in the ends and taking any photos. She’s not quite sure how she would secure it. I think the next one I make will be with longer ends that look more like a bow tie to tie under the back of the neck.

Sunday was spent with the family at my brothers. The twins now have their own fortification in the woods. Its great, even bigjobs (nac-mac-feegle for large people) can fit down the spiral slide, with a little bending. We all played for a while and then went in when it started to rain. Luckily between the house and the driveway the house has a porch type area which protects from the rain. We were able to leave the men outside cooking a bbq in a thunder storm. It would just not be very British of us not to try and bbq in unfavourable weather. Mum had a nap on the sofa after taking some cough medicine, and I read the kids a good night story before they went to bed.

Last night I was falling asleep with a cat kneading my arse. Amazingly quite a nice experience… Both our cats are being super cute at the moment. Otis has taken to sitting in our hemp style shopping bag hoping I’ll pick him up as I walk out the door in the morning. I am finding I’m loving the bed sharing with cats much more than I ever should because I’m allergic. At least at this time of year they’ve stop molting so much and I’ve not got hay fever at the same time. Oh and jasper has taken to licking up balls of fur from the carpet and eating them. Which reminds me we need to hoover more. The thing is he must be built of hairballs because he’s never thrown one up and consumes so much fluff!

I think that’s enough of an update for now. Tonight Scotty and I need to finally decide on some “ring words” and all that kind of stuff for our registrars appointment later in the week. Busy busy busy!
